"Shoes are one of those products that we wear daily and is a necessity. Although this is a necessity, no one ever seems to ever wonder how the shoes that everyone wears are produced. Well in the manufacturing process there are many steps, parts of a shoe and as well as materials. There are many different materials for shoes. There are certain ones for sport shoes, dress shoes, boots, sandals and more. Some materials are used to make the footwear comfortable, to be able to protect from injuries, or to make it look very exquisite. The design of shoes has varied enormously through time and from culture to culture, with appearance originally being tied to function. Though the human foot is adapted to varied terrain and climate conditions, it is still vulnerable to environmental hazards such as sharp rocks and temperature extremes, which shoes protect against.
This book contains seven chapters. Chapter 1 presents an introduction to leather shoes. It describes the tools for making leather shoes. It will also cover raw materials used in shoes making and shoe making process. Chapter 2 sheds light on hides and their treatment. A hide or skin is an animal skin treated for human use. The word “hide” is related to the German word “Haut” which means skin. The industry defines hides as “skins” of large animals e.g. cow, buffalo; the skins refer to “skins” of smaller animals: goat, sheep, deer, pig, fish, alligator, snake, etc. Common commercial hides include leather from cattle and other livestock animals, buckskin, alligator skin and snake skin. Chapter 3 highlights the processes of tanning. Proper tanning is the most important step in leather production. It is just one part in the entire process of manufacturing leather. Chapter 4 presents on the anatomy of the foot. The human foot is a combined structure of base and lever, supporting and balancing the body’s weight while standing, as well as raising and moving the body forward when in motion. The feet work for us the whole day, whether we stand, play, run, or walk, and in the process they become the most affected part of the anatomy. Chapter 5 focuses on how shoe style are made. Today, most shoes are made on a volume basis, rather than a craft basis. A pair of “bespoke” shoes, made in 2020 according to traditional practices, can be sold for thousands of dollars. Shoemakers may produce a range of footwear items, including shoes, boots, sandals, clogs and moccasins. Chapter 6 focuses on McKay and turned shoes. The McKay process is used very extensively in the manufacture of cheap shoes. It allows the two to be stitched together by means of a straight needle running through the entire thickness of upper, sole, and insole. Chapter 7 highlights on old-fashioned shoemaking and repairing. The chapter explores the old fashioned way of making shoes by hand. Furthermore, it covers how to make shoes and finally explores the repair scratches on leather shoes. "
